Windsor is the southernmost city in Canada, situated on the southern shore of the Detroit River. It is a major contributor to Canada’s automotive industry and is known to have a diverse culture. The area of Windsor was first inhabited by the First Nations and Native Americans. The first settlement was in 1749 but Windsor was incorporated as a village in 1854. Windsor’s economy is fundamentally based on manufacturing, tourism, education, and government services. As a border settlement, Windsor was a site of conflict amid the War of 1812. It was also a noteworthy passage point into Canada for refugees from slavery via the Underground Railroad. The city was also a major source of alcohol during American Prohibition.
