The First Nations first occupied Montréal as early as 4,000 years ago. European settlers later arrived and named the area Ville Marie or City of Mary. The area was given the name Montréal after the triple-peaked hill located in the heart of the city, Mount Royal. Montréal, Québec was officially founded in 1642. Montréal was incorporated as a city in 1832 and constituted in 2002.
